Abstract

There is now a significant body of international research that deals with the gendered implications of discursive policy framing. This chapter provides a detailed analysis of that existing literature. It also undertakes new research using Australian and British examples. Johnson argues that analysing discursive framing through a gendered lens can provide new insights into gender biases in policy formulation and the influence of such framing on the success, or otherwise, of policy outcomes. Consequently, such analyses make a particularly useful contribution to the existing public policy research applying discursive and interpretive approaches, as well as providing new insights into governments’ attempts to tackle gender inequality.
