Temporal Bone Cancers and Quality of Life

Temporal bone cancers and their treatment may be associated with a significant impact on health-related quality of life. In addition to the impact that these diseases have on social and emotional well-being, they may further impair physical well-being. Facial nerve dysfunction, hearing loss, and cosmetic disfigurement are a few disease-specific dimensions that may affect quality of life for patients with temporal bone cancers. Although a combination of cancer-specific instruments and symptom-specific instruments may be used to measure quality of life in these patients, further disease-specific instrument development for temporal bone cancers is necessary to help measure the impact of disease and treatment.
