Abstract

This chapter is devoted to the history of teaching calculation in Russia. It is a history in which political, pedagogical, and technological questions intersect, and much in it sounds quite contemporary and gives the mathematics educator much to think about. We analyze certain sections of Russian textbooks and approaches employed by them. Some characteristics specific to Russia are also discussed: the use of so-called number alphabets and the Russian abacus during certain periods.

    To solve the problem mentally one can note that \( 10^{2} + 11^{2} + 12^{2} = 13^{2} + 14^{2} = 365 \).

    Serfdom remained in Russia much later than in other European countries. It was abolished only in 1861.
