Abstract

This study is conducted to assess the influence of post weld heat treatment on weld defects. The purpose of this study is to identify and determine the defect type before and after post weld heat treatment (PWHT) with three different soaking temperatures and three ASTM A36 carbon steel specimens. The specimen is welded by using the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process and an AWS E6013 electrode is used with welding current range from 90 to 100 A. All the specimens are inspected using ultrasonic testing (UT) before and after the PWHT process. The specimens in the PWHT process are subjected to different soaking temperatures which are 490, 540 and 610 ℃. The result is observed from abnormality criteria to the obtained defects and it can be concluded that by increasing the soaking temperature values from the PWHT, certain types of current defects will be elongated.
