Writing the Chilena NuYorker Experience: Mariana Romo-Carmona

Abstract

Born in Santiago, Chile, Mariana Romo-Carmona emigrated as a teenager with her family to Hartford, Connecticut, and eventually made her permanent home in New York City. She chronicles important life trajectories from early motherhood and social justice advocacy to her roles as editor, author, archivist, and translator of pioneer Latina lesbian literature. She played an active role in bringing attention to the rights of LGBTQ communities of color in the U.S. with her involvement in small presses, alternative journals, edited collections, and translations. Her participation in these endeavors have been crucial in the advancement of literary and activist voices of LGBTQ communities. In addition to her honors and awards, she has published a novel, poetry, short fiction, and essays in both English and Spanish.
