Abstract
Physical activity has been proposed as one of the key factors in promoting and enhancing quality of life for older people. Overall levels of physical activity among older adults are low which disguises variations within and between groups. One group with below average levels of physical activity is older adults from minority ethnic groups. Using the example of Britain, this chapter examines some of the factors underpinning these low levels of activity. Cultural and religious factors may act as barriers to physical activity for some groups. However, we should be aware of the need to consider other structural factors such as socio-economic status and other dimensions of disadvantage when reporting and developing interventions to promote physical activity for older adults from minority groups.
