Abstract

Though developmental disabilities, both physical and intellectual, have existed and been recorded throughout history, health care and treatment of such disabilities is a relatively modern concept. Beginning with early reports of childhood differences, to the opening of the first child psychology clinic, to the development of specific tests and scales for understanding childhood disorders, the depth of treatment for children has greatly expanded over recent years. Understanding the changes throughout the history of childhood assessment and treatment of disorders is of great importance to clinicians, and so this chapter provides an overview of the expanding research dedicated to childhood treatment of mental health conditions and neurodevelopmental disorders.
