Part of the Early Modern Literature in History book series (EMLH)

Abstract

Partner sets out the many ways in which poetry participated in and shaped the visual culture of the Early Modern period, showing that a more historically specific understanding of visual themes in literature can illuminate a range of texts, as well as offering a new approach to the role of verbal images in visual culture. The introduction brings together the contexts that support the book’s innovative cross-disciplinary survey of the ways that poets used ideas about sight drawn from philosophy, theology, optical science, visual art and political polemic. It also sets out the book’s central interest in the role of visual ideas in the emergence of the modern categories of the ‘subjective’ and ‘objective’.
