It should be clear from Chaps.  7 and  8 that problems involving tangential loading are considerably simplified when they are uncoupled. If the contacting bodies can be approximated by half-spaces, this condition is satisfied if and only if Dundurs’ constant \(\beta \!=\!0\), as defined in Eq. ( 7.8), the most common case being that in which the two bodies are of similar materials. We shall assume that \(\beta \!=\!0\) through Sects. 9.19.4 of this chapter.
