Numerous engineering applications involve the impact of two bodies (Goldsmith, Impact. The Theory and Physical Behaviour of Colliding Solids, Edward Arnold, London, 1960, Goldsmith 1960, Stronge, Impact Mechanics. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2000, Stronge 2000). In the field of dynamics, bodies are generally assumed to be rigid, so that the impact occurs during an infinitesimal period of time. This implies a delta function loading \(P(t)\!=\!I\delta (t)\). In other words, the contact force is strictly infinite at the moment of impact, but an impulse \( I=\int P(t)dt\) is transmitted corresponding to the exchange of momentum between the bodies.
