Dermoscopy of Melanoma

Abstract

Dermoscopy is a technique using a hand-held magnification device (a dermatoscope) to visualise morphologic structures in the skin not visible to the naked eye (1). It was developed as a tool for assessing pigmented skin lesions, especially melanoma. Over time the usefulness of dermoscopy has expanded from pigmented lesions to non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), to hair disorders (trichoscopy) and to general dermatoses of the skin. Dermoscopic evaluation of pigmented lesions involves using two-step algorithm or pattern analysis methods. In this chapter the two approaches are outlined as is the language of dermoscopy and common features of dermoscopic algorithms. Special site evaluation such as the face, acral surfaces and nail is also discussed.
