Abstract

Since the time of the ancient Greeks, the concepts of mathematics have been closely associated with the notions of logical reasoning and proof. After analyzing various aspects of this interaction, the author identifies four features that are important for the education of prospective mathematics teachers : learning the structure of mathematical sentences, learning the concept of mathematical proof , learning methods of mathematical proof , and learning the structure of mathematical theories . Discrete mathematics offers an exceptional means through which students can learn these four features.

The author expresses his sincere gratitude to the reviewers for careful reading of the paper, their comments and suggestions that contributed to improve it mathematically and grammatically.
