Abstract

Writing a grant proposal is a special skill. There is a wide variety of grant funding sources, both government and private. Each will have its specific instructions for preparing the grant application, but there are elements—such as the executive summary, statement of project objectives, timeline, and budget justification—that are part of virtually all grant proposals. This chapter describes these basic elements and goes on to discuss grantsmanship, the grant review process, and common errors in writing grant proposals.

The relatively young woman stood up from her computer and replied while sipping her coffee: “It is hard work and it requires a lot of dedication. I know it’s going to be many hours before I finish this grant and I know the chances of getting funded aren’t in my favor. But, it’s a labor of love because I’m discovering a cure for cancer.”

From an article by American physician and educator Chip Souba [1].
