Fundamentals of Optical Storage

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Digital Storage in Consumer Electronics

Abstract

This chapter will review the optical storage products now available on the market and review the basic operation and history of optical drives and disks, including CD, DVD, and Blu-ray disc. It will provide a quick overview of how data is organized on an optical disk. We provide a guide to the user through the issues and expectations on optical disk reliability and longevity. It will help you learn about what could drive the use of high capacity optical disks and new technology, such as holographic recording.

The section on optical disc technology owes much to Dr. Richard Zech, Technical Consultant and Expert Witness, specializing in optical data storage technology and to an extensive review by Brian Berg of Berg Software Design.

Although not often discussed in public forums, major optical media manufacturers such as Ritek and CMC Magnetics have the ability to produce discs that fall into A, B, and C categories. A Grade is highest quality, B Grade is intermediate quality, and C Grade lowest quality (often used as market loss leaders under obscure brand names).
