Recording Sound

  • Ryan Vachon

Earlier chapters placed emphasis on coupling visual context with great sound and discussed the multitude of audio recording equipment available for purchase and use. Now it is time to learn how to use the equipment in certain applications to capture the best sound possible. The most appropriate methods for capturing sound are dictated by (1) the situation that you are hoping to record and (2) the sound recording devices that you have in your arsenal. This chapter portrays examples of different sound recording situations, such as capturing background sound , recording interviews and narrations, dealing with variable sound levels, filming public events and managing wind disturbances. Lastly, we will discuss how to work with the gear that you have in your quiver to record the sounds that you want. Just like every effort in film, techniques take time to master, so take time to practice thoughtfully and unrushed well before an important filming day.
