Abstract

Once upon a time there was a giant who had been captured by the hunchbacked dwarfs when he was very young. They made him their slave and forced him to plough the fields and weave clothes for them. He also had to grind wheat into flour for them, bake bread, slaughter animals, and cook. He chopped down trees in the woods and carried stones from the quarries to build their houses. From the earth he mined iron and gold. He watched over the ugly children of the dwarfs, carried them in his arms, washed their dirty nappies, and tolerated all of their moods. He was a hardworking, goodhearted giant.
