Happiness (1925)

  • Kurt Schwitters

Once upon a time there were three sisters who looked alike. They weren’t beautiful. They weren’t rich. They weren’t smart. But they lived simply, quietly, and contentedly. Then the three had different dreams. The first one dreamed that great happiness would be bestowed upon them. The second dreamed that they would be able to find happiness by themselves with the help of a gypsy. The third dreamed that they would find happiness only if they made the right wish. And then a gypsy happened to arrive soon after the dreams. She had a bundle of presents under her arm and gave each sister a choice. The first sister wished to be beautiful; the second, to be rich; the third, to be smart. Then the gypsy said, ‘Your wishes are bad,’ and she disappeared.
