Space and the Wide Reverse Strategy

Abstract

At this point I have examined how Spielberg utilises the conventions and norms of the classical continuity system including ‘rediscovering’ deep space compositions and staging and how he uses both to construct narration. At the same time, I have also noted Spielberg’s reluctance to employ the conventional shot, reverse shot configuration with the kind of frequency that is characteristic of classical Hollywood narration. Instead, it is my contention that Spielberg uniquely modifies the shot, reverse shot to create an emphatically cinematic system that constructs a kind of ‘panoramic’ scenographic space. I call this the wide reverse and it has wide ranging implications for how his narration is created and perceived.
