Abstract

Key elements of the history is to evaluate whether the knee pain developed following trauma. If the knee pain is unrelated to trauma, acute (<6 weeks) vs chronic (>=6 weeks) pain is associated with different etiology. Evaluate if the knee pain is accompanied by effusion. Then ask patient if the pain is localized to compartment (anterior, lateral, positerior or diffuse). The knee has the largest articular surface of any joint in the body. By convention, musculoskeletal pain lasting less than 6 weeks is defined as acute, whereas pain lasting longer than 6 weeks is chronic.
