Abstract
Alopecia represents a group of disorders characterized by hair loss in diffuse or focal patterns. It is a common problem that is often a source of significant emotional and social stress for patients. Alopecias are divided into scarring and non-scarring. There are various etiologies in each group, and the similarities between them can pose a diagnostic challenge to practitioners. A systematic approach to patients with alopecia, including a thorough history and close inspection of the hair and scalp, is important to the diagnosis.
