No Villainous Mother—The Life of Eva Larkin

Chapter

Abstract

Larkin famously acknowledged both the duality and polarity of parental influence within him. “Pray the Lord that my mother is superior in me,” he once wrote to his friend Jim Sutton. And yet in all the biographical writings to date it is Sydney Larkin who has generally occupied the superior position. On closer examination there is a strong case to be made for his mother, Eva, being by far the more significant influence over his life. Her voice has been hidden, but there to be heard, in the thousands of letters she wrote to her son and in other documentation lodged in the Larkin Archive. It is a story well worth telling.
