Ambitious Daughter: Louisa May Alcott and Her Mother

  • Gardner McFall

Louisa May Alcott had a not-so-secret (at least, not to her) champion in her corner: her mother, Abigail May Alcott, known as “Abby” or “Abba” to her husband and brother and “Marmee” to her four daughters; she enabled Louisa not only to break through gender barriers of the day, but pursue her ambition of becoming a writer and produce the first classic girls’ book, based on her own “simple and true” experience (as she referred to it), with Marmee heroically at its center. In doing so, whatever critics may feel about the book, Louisa May Alcott secured a place in the canon of children’s literature.
