Abstract
Introduction: Personality disorder patients suffer from their poor interpersonal life, influenced by their strict personality characteristics. The latter could also influence their sexual life, because the personality characteristics could increase sexual difficulties and dysfunctions. However the connection between specific personality disorders and sexual dysfunction has not been expanded in literature. The aim of this chapter is to highlight the state of the art concerning the connection between personality disorders and sexual dysfunctions.
Method: A systematic review has been implemented on PubMed using the keywords “sexual dysfunction” and “personality disorders.”
Results: The research produced 456 items. After the selection on the basis of the title and the abstract, we found nine articles, respecting our criteria for this review. The majority of the study concerns the histrionic and borderline disorders, while the less studied are paranoid and schizoid, respecting existent results. The nature of the hypothetical connections between sexual dysfunctions and personality disorders has been discussed.
Conclusion: The paucity of the results and the nature of the studies impede the outline of clear connections between sexual dysfunctions and personality disorders. Clinical and research implications have been discussed.
