Abstract
This paper is a study of the lives of Russian mathematics teachers during the middle of the nineteenth century. The study of the life of “ordinary” people—as opposed to only renowned ones—has long ago began to attract researchers. Nor have “ordinary teachers” been ignored. But such studies (at least in Russia) have usually concerned teachers in general, without distinguishing them by subject, and the periods studied were also later ones, about which more evidence has survived. Meanwhile, the teachers of different subjects had their own differences, and the period to which this study is devoted also had its important distinctive features. This paper studies various aspects of the lives of teachers: their origins, education, workload, involvement in methodological work, material circumstances, and so on. The present study relies mainly on materials from St. Petersburg archives and focuses mainly on St. Petersburg teachers.
