Abstract

This chapter deals with how cultural works establish standards of reception, categorizations, and a hierarchy of effects. Introducing an emotional dimension to the study of cosmopolitan reception allows us to understand how taste preferences are established, give rise to ethnico-national hierarchies of cultural products, and engender different levels of investment and identification (or lack thereof) with regard to foreign aesthetics. This chapter also allows us to highlight the interlinkages between emotional attachment and a desire to learn, as well as between skills and aesthetic preferences.
