Abstract

A pericardial effusion may occur in association with many different disease processes. Many effusions will resolve spontaneously as the causative disease abates (Fig. 51.1). Occasionally more urgent pericardiocentesis is needed. To avoid penetration of the right ventricle an ECG electrode should be attached to the needle and the ECG monitored, to indicate contact with the heart.
