Part of the book series: Political Corruption and Governance ((PCG))

Abstract

This chapter presents the current state of knowledge about political finance around the world. The focus lies on the relation between political finance regulations and its relation to the anti-corruption fight. First, a short overview of theories of party finance and the development of the research field is given. Second, the current state of regulations around the world is summarized. The summary is juxtaposed with the assessment of international organizations that monitor political funding. Third, the chapter examines various practical approaches towards political funding in selected regions. Main characteristics of these approaches and their specific aspects are highlighted. Finally, the issues of transparency and robustness of political competition are tackled, and their value as practical goals within the framework of the anti-corruption agenda is considered.
