Abstract

This chapter reviews the two-year process from the fall of 2013 to the fall of 2015 during which the students and faculty of New York City College of Technology were actively engaged in the U.S. Department of Energy’s bi-annual Solar Decathlon Competition. Our entry, the DURA (Diverse, Urban, Resilient, and Adaptable) home, is a response to the impact of Superstorm Sandy, which hit the coast of NYC in October of 2012, flooding the city and taking large sections of the city off the power grid for weeks on end. The success of this experience is due to the combination of methods including place-based, project-based, and interdisciplinary learning strategies paired with a real project with student-defined objectives and goals.
