Mondlane in Dar es Salaam

Abstract

This chapter describes Mondlane’s move to Dar es Salaam in mid-1963. It highlights his attempts to overcome the damage caused by Milas’s divisive actions, but also illustrates Mondlane’s failure to effect a reconciliation with Mabunda and Gumane. It highlights the optimism of Mondlane’s first months in Dar and the beginnings of Frelimo’s efforts to launch an armed struggle in Mozambique’s northernmost province. And it illustrates the tensions created by the fact that Frelimo’s leadership was primarily drawn from the south. The need to develop a strong base of support in predominantly Maconde regions in the north caused Mondlane to attempt to draw individuals such as Lazaro N’Kavandame into Frelimo’s leadership ranks. The chapter concludes with a detailed account of Mondlane’s return to the USA in August 1965 and a speech he gave that signaled Frelimo’s growing reliance on assistance from the Soviet Union and China.
