Abstract

There is debate in critical race theory about the role of empathy in social progress, particularly in terms of the conditions for people of African descent. Can performance create “connections” between people of different races that help lead to the eventual dissolution of racism? Is the notion of racial “progress” a myth or can we look to an optimistic Afro-utopian future? This essay uses Clybourne Park to “think through” the possibilities of performance.
