Abstract
An important aspect of teaching beginner piano students may be described in terms of teaching the student as different from teaching the repertoire. This approach specifically involves the teacher’s ability to go beyond the repertoire to stimulate comprehensive student musical development. Also relevant to the aspect of teaching the student is the accumulated repertoire approach wherein students review and refine pieces they know how to play, instead of dropping pieces after they’ve been learned. Teaching the student may also require teachers to consider their roles as student advocators and agitators. Advocating is all about welcoming students into unconditional learning processes that respect students’ personality. As agitators, teachers challenge their students by taking them beyond their comfort zone. Finally, this chapter examines what happens when students’ concern shifts from fulfilling their own self-interests to care for the wellbeing of music.
