Abstract
This chapter reviews the pathophysiology of insulin resistance during pregnancy including the role of the placenta and placentally derived hormones such as cortisol and human placental lactogen. The teleological foundation of insulin resistance in human pregnancy and the etiology of gestational diabetes are also discussed.
