Understanding Children in Foster Care

Abstract

It is clear that maltreated children and children in foster care have high rates of mental health problems, even in comparison to other disadvantaged groups. These mental health problems need to be taken into account when doing the Relational Learning Framework (RLF). To complete the RLF, we need to be aware of factors which may impact on the well-being of children in care, including developmental disabilities, and physical and mental health problems. The current chapter provides an overview of the research into foster children’s mental health, including misdiagnosis and diagnostic dilemmas, and the effect of foster care and placement disruption on behaviour problems. The interwoven effects of trauma and attachment disruption on children’s lives are illustrated with a case example.
