Abstract

The notion of a relativization of a relation algebra \( \mathfrak{U} \) is closely related to the notion of a subalgebra of \( \mathfrak{U} \). In the latter, the fundamental operations of \( \mathfrak{U} \) are restricted to a subset of \( \mathfrak{U} \) that is closed under these operations. In the former, the fundamental operations of \( \mathfrak{U} \) are relativized to the subset of all elements below a given element. Relativizations play a fundamental role in the study of direct decompositions of relation algebras.
