Abstract

Distal deep vein thrombosis (DVT), also known as calf DVT, is a frequent medical condition and represents around 50% of all lower limb DVTs in ultrasound series. Whereas the optimal management of acute proximal DVT and pulmonary embolism (PE) has been extensively studied and well standardized, the diagnostic and therapeutic management of distal DVT remains one of the most controversial subjects in the field of venous thromboembolism. Robust data arising from randomized studies remain scarce. Nevertheless, recent data suggest that the use of therapeutic anticoagulation may not be necessary in patients with distal DVT at low risk of extension.
