Abstract

Examples of law enforcement and criminal justice encroachments on privacy include police ‘stop and search’, the use of ‘undercover’ police and the interception of telephone calls. It includes the taking of photographs by Automatic Number Plate Recognition roadside cameras and the maintenance of databases containing these pictures. Overcrowded prisons bring their own impact on privacy as does the wearing of electronic tags as a community punishment. Strategies and interventions to prevent acts of terrorism and the various restrictions on dissemination of personal information to assist former prisoners to resettle in the community, all have to tackle the problem of privacy. This chapter also discusses the definition of privacy itself and allied concepts such as information privacy and data protection.
