Measuring Student Success: A Review of Methods and Motives

The measurement of student success in higher education has become a significant issue in recent years. There are numerous ways to measure student success, and the level of quantification is increasingly driven by both the capacity for data collection and analyses and the number of stakeholders. This is leading to the situation where student success quantification is at risk of being a goal in its own right, rather than a tool to inform institutional policy. We consider the measurement of student success from three different perspectives: institutional, student, and societal. We outline issues with conceptualization and measurement before concluding with thoughts for future directions.
