Cloud Computing

This chapter seeks to define Cloud Computing (CC) and charts the evolution of the CC concept. The attributes of the CC computing environment include three types of CC—Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). The ongoing need for access to more and more powerful computing technologies is discussed and the success of the distributed computing model chronicled. The trajectory to a technically connected world provides the reader with a visual tool as to the history embedded in the current CC offering. With reference to the potential future trajectory, we also offer insight into the primarily industry-led forecasts and predictions for the CC industry’s future.
