Abstract

‘American Highways’ concentrates on the poetry of Eamonn Wall, Greg Delanty and Paul Muldoon, locating their work against the historical backdrop of Irish emigration to America. This chapter examines the tension between representative responsibility to an existing emigrant community and the imperative of poetic integrity that is central to all three poets’ identities. In grappling with inherited emigration narratives, lived migration experiences and competing poetic responsibilities, and it the opening chapter shows how cultural and personal memory practices underpin these poets’ responses to their migrant status.
