Abstract
Early life’s lessons in altruism, perseverance, and the influence of societal forces on a person’s life combined to mold the professor’s values and outlook. The choice of staying in the academe as a political worker after graduation afforded a decade of steady employment, but it also bred self-doubt and an identity crisis involving the question of “What am I?” The decision to pursue an academic career brought him into the field of educational philosophy. The professor enjoyed teaching and research, as well as the new status of a legitimate academic. New appointments enabled his ascension in the university’s administration, but a growing awareness of the chasm between ideas and practice in the field of education led him to ask: “What am I doing?”
