The Meridian Line or Heliometer in the Basilica of San Petronio

Chapter
Part of the Springer Biographies book series (SPRINGERBIOGS)

Abstract

Originally, the construction of the meridian line in the Basilica of San Petronio was undertaken between 1575 and 1576 by “Ignazio Danti, Dominican,” who “had set out to draw a line in the Church of St. Petronius for observations of the Sun…”. This is how Cassini begins, in his memoirs, to relate his big adventure connected to this church and its sundial or, as he called it himself, heliometer, because he measured the apparent diameter of the Sun during the year.
