Part of the Springer Biographies book series (SPRINGERBIOGS)

Even if the notes dictated by Cassini to his secretary were coming to the end, there are several remarkable astronomical works and discoveries that have still to be unveiled. As referred to in the previous chapter, the sunspots and, in particular, the observations made together with Jean-Baptiste Colbert became the key that would literally unlock the doors of the still unfinished observatory of Paris to the astronomer, who would finally occupy his apartment on September 14, 1671. This date is fixed in the memory of the Ligurian scientist because it was almost coincident with the appearance of a series of spots on the visible side of the solar disk, as foreseen by his theory.
