Abstract

On June, 20, 1667, Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi, whom Cassini had already known during his frequentation of the court of Alexander VII, ascended to the Papal throne, taking the name of Clemente IX. The next year, in March 1668, a “spina celeste meteora”, as it was defined by Cassini who did not know what it was (literally, a “heavenly meteor spur”), appeared in the sky, moving through the constellation of Eridanus towards that of Orion.
