Abstract

Few other developmental concerns trigger as much stress in parents as toileting difficulties. Many questions have been raised and even more opinions have been given regarding how children can be better assisted in the process of toilet training. Numerous treatments and interventions emerged targeting different hypothesized underlying mechanisms of toileting. Upon reviewing the existing literature, proposed theories regarding the etiology of eliminative disturbances can be divided into three categories. Behavioral theories focus on the learning process of appropriate toileting behaviors and are mainly composed of classical and operant conditioning. The second category provides physiological and biochemical explanations through the discussion of the functions of relevant muscle, nervous, and endocrine systems; damages or abnormalities in these systems may contribute to elimination difficulties. Third, hypotheses were also made regarding the associations between psychological disturbances and incontinence due to the high comorbid rates. However, it is not clear at this time whether or not a causal relationship exists. This chapter will cover these three theoretical models along with corresponding empirical evidence.
