Abstract

The computer room at the Istituto Nazionale per le Applicazioni del Calcolo (INAC) was 200 square meters large, on the 4th floor of the building of the Italian National Research Council, a rationalist building rising on what at that time was Piazzale delle Scienze (now Piazzale Aldo Moro) in Rome. The computer was a Mark I machine, built by the English company Ferranti. The machine was also known as Manchester Universal Electronic Computer DC.4 because it had indeed been built on the basis of a prototype designed at Manchester University.
