Abstract

Optimal perioperative pain management for patients undergoing hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery requires a team-based approach using multimodal therapy and regional analgesia. Opioid-sparing regimens that include acetaminophen and gabapentin can improve postoperative outcomes. Regional anesthetic techniques (epidural and TAP blocks) are an important component of pain management strategies. This current chapter will review the most current evidence-based techniques and medication regimens for providing superior postoperative pain control while avoiding adverse effects of analgesic therapies.
