Abstract

With historical evidence drawn from the reigns of nine Joseon kings during the two centuries of Ming China’s predominance in Northeast Asia, this chapter looks into the different motives behind the Korean political elites’ formation of Joseon Korea’s foreign policy toward Ming China, revealing the interplay of moral and strategic forces in this unipolar period. Based upon historical records, it finds that even in a unipolar order, the practice of Sadae was based upon a mix of ideational and material concerns.
