Abstract

This chapter describes the current knowledge of the physiology of the endocrine system and related homeostatic mechanisms. This chapter explores the mechanisms of hormone synthesis, release, and feedback control. Common endocrine diseases and their presenting symptoms are discussed. The chapter includes mechanisms behind disease states as well as common treatments. This information is blended together to create a discussion of anesthetic considerations and management concerns that anesthesiologists may face when caring for patients undergoing surgery for endocrine and non-endocrine based maladies.
