Abstract

Furuncles are deep infections of the hair follicle. If multiple inflamed hair follicles coalesce with infected material draining into a single inflammatory mass, they are referred to as a carbuncle. Furuncles are red, painful nodules and usually occur in areas affected by sweat and friction. Treatment involves hygiene, warm compresses, and sometimes incision and drainage and/or antibiotics.
