Abstract

The theoretical ideas set out in Chap. 2 are now mobilized to provide a reasoned description of the emergence and form of cities in the nineteenth century. Special attention is given to the agglomerative tendencies of the workshop and factory system, and to the breakdowns of social reproduction in early capitalist cities.
